Acne Scars

Intro – Acne scars are permanent changes in the texture or appearance of the skin that occur as a result of severe or prolonged acne. These scars can be distressing and affect a person’s self-esteem. Acne scars often result from the body’s natural healing process after inflammation and tissue damage caused by severe acne.

Causes

  1. Severity of Acne: Severe and deep acne lesions are more likely to cause scarring compared to milder forms of acne.
  2. Delay in Treatment: Not treating acne promptly or using inappropriate treatments can increase the risk of scarring.
  3. Picking or Squeezing Acne: Manipulating or squeezing acne lesions can damage the surrounding tissue and exacerbate scarring.
  4. Genetics: Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to developing more noticeable scars.
  5. Skin Type: People with certain skin types, particularly those with more melanin (pigment), may be more prone to developing certain types of scars, such as keloids.
  6. Sun Exposure: Sun exposure can worsen the appearance of existing scars and make them more noticeable.

Acne scars can be emotionally distressing, but there are various treatment options available to help improve their appearance.
