HyperPigmentation

Intro – Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition characterised by the darkening of certain areas of the skin, resulting in patches or spots that are darker than the surrounding skin. It occurs when there is an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour. Hyperpigmentation can be caused by various factors and can affect people of all skin types and ethnicities.

Causes

  • Medications: Some medications, such as certain antipsychotic drugs and chemotherapy drugs, can lead to hyperpigmentation as a side effect.
  • Chemical Exposure: Exposure to certain chemicals or irritants can trigger inflammation and hyperpigmentation.
  • Friction and Trauma: Friction, rubbing, or repeated trauma to the skin can stimulate melanin production and cause darkening.
  • Diet and Nutritional Factors: Certain foods and nutritional deficiencies can impact skin health and contribute to hyperpigmentation.
