Dry Skin

Intro – Dry skin, also known as xerosis, is a common skin condition characterised by a lack of moisture or hydration in the outermost layer of the skin, called the epidermis. This can lead to skin that feels rough, tight, flaky, and sometimes itchy or irritated. Dry skin can occur anywhere on the body, but it’s commonly found on the arms, legs, hands, and face.

Causes

  • Lack of Natural Moisture: Dry skin occurs when the skin’s natural lipid (oil) barrier is compromised, allowing water to escape from the skin’s surface more easily. This can be due to factors such as genetics or aging.
  • Environmental Factors: Exposure to dry and low-humidity air, cold weather, wind, and excessive heat can strip the skin of its natural moisture and lead to dryness.
  • Hot Showers and Harsh Soaps: Prolonged exposure to hot water and the use of harsh soaps or cleansers can strip the skin of its natural oils, contributing to dryness.
  • Frequent Washing: Frequent washing, especially with harsh soaps, can remove the skin’s natural oils and lead to dryness.
  • Underlying Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, thyroid disorders, and diabetes, can contribute to dry skin.
